From Foxcombe #1

Introduction

Meadowborough is a village of animals surrounded by mountains, a lake, and a forest.

The mountains are called the Melanite Sierra. The lake is called Reed Lake. And the forest is called Sylv.

Within the village, many species of animal live and work, creating a community.

Foxcombe’s role in the community is to be a detective.

A detective searches for answers to questions, using their senses and tools to help.

Foxcombe had a secretary, a skunk named Ozine, but no partner to help him with his detective cases.

Therefore, he was very tired and having trouble keeping up with his cases.

One day, Foxcombe decided to get a sidekick, a fellow animal to be a detective with him.

He wrote many letters asking the animals of Meadowborough to be his sidekick. Pigeons took his letters and flew them to the houses of the animals.

Foxcombe was excited to see who turned up. While waiting, Foxcombe continued his current case.

Case One: The Monster of Reed Lake

Foxcombe’s current case was to investigate a monster causing trouble at Reed Lake.

Many animals who lived near or in the lake complained about a monster dropping from the sky and splashing into the water. When the monster landed in the lake, it caused great trouble, creating huge waves and drenching everything.

Foxcombe left his lair and set off for Reed Lake.

Along the way, he came across Sumpter the camel. Sumpter is a travelling trader, carrying all his goods in big crates on his back.

Sumpter stopped Foxcombe and asked to trade, holding up a weedy, grassy lake costume.

Foxcombe was amazed! If he wore the lake costume, he would look like the lake and the monster would not be able to see him.

Foxcombe brought a piece of melanite out of his breast pocket. Melanite is a rare, slick black stone that is very valuable.

Sumpter traded his lake costume for the melanite, and the two friends said goodbye.

Foxcombe arrived at Reed Lake and put on the lake costume. Then, he slowly slid into the water. He blended in with all the weeds and grasses in the lake, making him nearly invisible.

He sat quietly in the lake for a long time. It started to get dark.

Suddenly, Foxcombe felt a great flapping wind above him, then splash!

A giant wave covered his head for a moment. All the lake animals hid. Some of the lake animals were splashed out of the lake.

It was now so dark that Foxcombe could not tell what the monster was.

He quietly swam close to the monster. It could not see him thanks to his lake costume.

Foxcombe got close enough to touch the monster. He realized that it was no monster. It was a huge bird!

The monster was the biggest bird he had ever seen. It put its head underwater and came up with a beak full of weeds.

Foxcombe could tell what kind of bird it was—it was a swan!

Hm? Foxcombe noticed something shiny in its feathers. Very carefully, he pulled the object from the swan’s feathers. It was a piece of melanite.

Then, the swan flew off with the lakeweeds north, towards the Melanite Sierra….”
