A Contribution to the Long and Lettered Trope of Feline Poetry

My cat –
So much in him I envy:
Impeccancy, agility,
And the shameless sleeping for 18 hours straight;
There are things I do when he’s around
That I shoo him from seeing;
Dog to dog differ in degree of obeisance,
But cat to cat are similar in their autonomy;
Man toils arduously to put food… in the bowl,
And somehow, somehow,
The thankless cat with its
Solacing purr
And its reminding us more of what is not
Than is
Important
Seems grateful.
I’d be the cat,
If I could be else than human;
I’d be the cat,
Who lives correctly
And not very long.
